How does the free account benefit of two subscriber-only NEJM articles work?

Create a free NEJM.org account or, if you’ve already done so, sign in to access two subscriber-only NEJM articles (from 1990 to present) of your choice each calendar month.
Ongoing access to the article and all features (PDF, PowerPoint slides, etc.) associated with the article will last for the duration of the calendar month, until the free account benefit resets on the first day of the next month.
Content such as Interactive Medical Cases and Videos in Clinical Medicine are considered the equivalent of an article.
This benefit applies to content published from 1990 to present, and does not include the NEJM Archive (1812-1989).

Do freely available articles – with or without sign-in – count against the two subscriber-only article benefits available with a free account each month?

All NEJM.org visitors have access to the following content without subscription or account sign-in requirements. These items are not subscriber-only and therefore do not count towards the free account benefit of two subscriber-only articles each month:

Are Weekly CME and the NEJM Archive (1812-1989) accessible with a free account?

No. Articles associated with Weekly CME may be accessed, but the CME activity is only available to personal subscribers. Personal subscriptions include full access to all Weekly CME activities.

Articles from the NEJM Archive (1812-1989) also must be purchased. Personal subscriptions include 50 free NEJM Archive (1812-1989) views. Many institutional site licenses include access to the NEJM Archive (1812-1989).

Will the unused portion of my free account benefit of two subscriber-only articles rollover to the next month?

What if I want to read more than two subscriber-only articles using my free account in a given month?

At a recent medical conference, NEJM published an article that coincided with the meeting. I created a free NEJM.org account, signed in, and read the article. Now when I sign in, I am unable to access the article. Why?

Articles published in coordination with medical meetings are freely available to all with sign-in during the meeting. Afterwards, most of this content becomes subscriber-only and can be accessed by using one of the two free subscriber-only articles that comes with a free NEJM.org account each month, by accessing NEJM.org through your institution (if your institution has an NEJM.org site license), or by purchasing a personal subscription to NEJM.

Is there any reason to create a free NEJM.org account if I reside in a low-income country in which access to subscriber-only content on NEJM.org is freely available?

If NEJM has provided free access in a low-income country, there is no need to create an account to access subscriber-only content. However, a free NEJM.org account will be necessary to take full advantage of other features and benefits such as:

NEJM.org uses cookies to collect information and help personalize your online experience. Cookies are small files stored on your computer that are used to recognize you and your access privileges and preferences. Cookies allow you to store your username and password so you don’t have to log in each time you visit. NEJM.org stores and protects minimal personally identifying information in cookies, and does not store complete records or credit card numbers in cookies. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies. Most browsers can be configured to prevent this, but you may not be able to access some parts of NEJM.org without cookies. How often will I receive email alerts?

Details about frequency and timing of email alerts can be found in the Email & Alerts section of My Account. The Weekly Table of Contents is sent every Wednesday evening (ET) and once during the weekend, Resident Briefing is sent weekly on Thursday morning (ET), and Specialty Alerts are sent monthly at the beginning of the month. Recently Published content alerts are sent at the discretion of NEJM editors.

How can I find out why I am not receiving alerts for which I have signed up?

If you are not receiving expected email alerts, check settings under My Account. Also, check your junk or spam mail folders. Be sure to add [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] as email contacts and/or the @nejm.org and @n.nejm.org domains to your spam filter white list. If you continue to experience problems, contact Customer Service.

Can I suspend email alerts for vacation?

Is any NEJM content available via podcast or RSS feed?

Yes. NEJM offers a Weekly Audio Summary podcast and an Audio Interviews podcast. These free podcasts are available to listen or download on NEJM.org, or you can subscribe at your choice of Apple iTunes, Google Play, or Spotify. NEJM also offers a variety of RSS feeds to listen to the Current Issue, trending content such as most emailed or most viewed, along with feeds for 20 medical specialties.

Does NEJM offer iPhone apps?

NEJM offers two iPhone applications through the Apple App store.

The NEJM Image Challenge App ($9.99) allows you to test your diagnostic skills. The app randomly selects from hundreds of clinical photos published by NEJM. Simply view an image, read the brief, choose your answer, and receive immediate feedback.
The The NEJM CareerCenter App (Free) app allows you to search the latest permanent and locum tenens jobs by specialty, position type, or location.

Does NEJM offer any Android Apps?

Yes, the iPad app was discontinued on November 30, 2020.

What is the cost of a subscription and how can I pay?

Subscription rates are based on the geographic location of the subscriber and the professional category of the person or institution receiving the subscription. View the full list of available NEJM products or subscribe today.

NEJM accepts MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express, and PayPal for subscription payments, in addition to checks. You may also choose to be billed.

Subscription payments should be mailed to the New England Journal of Medicine, P.O. Box 9150, Waltham, MA 02454-9150, USA; customers in Europe can mail payments to the New England Journal of Medicine, E.M.D.GmbH, Birkenstr. 67 10559 Berlin, Germany.

How can I access the NEJM Archive (1812–1989)?

NEJM personal subscribers receive 50 NEJM Archive (1812–1989) article views as part of their paid subscription. Your My Account will track the number of free NEJM Archive article views you have available.

NEJM institutional patrons obtain access when their institutions purchase the NEJM Archive (1812–1989). If your institution doesn’t subscribe to the NEJM Archive, you may click here to recommend doing so to your librarian.

Where can I find my subscription expiration date and customer number?

You can check your account status and information under My Account at NEJM.org. If you are an NEJM print subscriber, you will also find your customer number and expiration date printed above your name on the address label on your print edition. The first series of numbers on the left is your customer number; the second series refers to the expiration date. Renewal notices are sent several months in advance of your subscription expiration date and reminders also appear online.

For online-only customers, your customer number would have been sent via email when you subscribed. If you require assistance, please contact Customer Service.

How do I obtain full-text access to articles on NEJM.org?

A paid personal subscription gives you complete access to NEJM.org content back to 1990. Simply sign in with your username and password. If you have a print subscription but do not yet have an NEJM.org username and password, you will need to activate your account.

With the creation of a free NEJM account, all registered users can access up to two subscriber-only articles (from 1990 to present) of their choosing, free, each month.

Why are print issues no longer available to subscribers in India?

Due to the many challenges subscribers in India have experienced with on-time delivery of NEJM print issues, we are permanently discontinuing print issue delivery in India. Digital-only subscriptions are available and provide subscriber access to NEJM.org that includes all the content in print issues, as soon as it is published, plus all content back to 1990, valuable multimedia and interactive features, article collections by specialty, and more.

Can I replace a missing or damaged issue?

Do you offer free Public Access to low-income countries?

Yes. In low-income countries where resources are limited, NEJM provides free or low-cost full-text access to NEJM.org through Geo-IP (recognition of regionally-based IP addresses) and through partnership with Research4Life’s Access to Research in Health (Hinari) program. In determining which countries qualify for such access, NEJM generally follows eligibility criteria established by Research4Life.

How do I activate remote access to my institution’s site license subscription?

NEJM.org institutional remote access automatically pairs accounts, rather than devices. To gain remote access to your institution’s subscription rights, sign in to or create your free NEJM.org account using any device—phone, tablet, laptop, desktop—while simultaneously logged in to your institution’s IP range to have your institution’s access rights automatically paired to your NEJM.org account. Do I have to be physically on campus to activate NEJM.org institutional remote access?

If my laptop is paired to my institution’s site license, am I limited to using only my laptop?

Is there a limit to the number of devices and/or browsers that can be used simultaneously for remote access?

Do I need to pair my NEJM.org account with my institution’s subscription if I already have a personal NEJM subscription?

Pairing is not necessary if you have a personal subscription to NEJM.org. Using any device, log in to NEJM.org as a personal subscriber for your full subscriber access to NEJM.org. However, if you sign in to NEJM.org as a personal subscriber while within your institution’s IP range, your device will automatically be paired with your institution, but it doesn’t provide you with any benefit beyond what your personal subscription provides.

I have followed the pairing instructions, but I am still not able to access subscriber-only content. Why?
